PIG DESTROYER - Mass & Volume

It's not altogether surprising that grindcore freakies Pig Destroyer have put out this doom-drenched EP (originally a digital-only benefit EP for the family of friend and Relapse employee Pat Egan after his death), given that they've toyed with experimental EPs in the past (hi, Natasha, thanks for the nightmares) and given that, really, even though the title track here is 19 minutes long it still sounds like Pig Destroyer, even if they usually deal in two-minute grinders. But here it's all sludge and doom and bad vibes, feedback and empty spaces and just horror. It's heavy, and it's good. Second and final (it's enough, trust me) cut, "Red Tar," is a more concise 6:36 sludge/doom tune that picks things up a bit and gets even closer to regular Pig Destroyer territory (which is still the land of total insanity). Not sure under what circumstances it'd be appropriate to put this EP on, so it kind of has the feel of a fun (uh... "fun") tossed-off experimental disc, but one that crushes and maims and is actually way more fun to listen to than "experimental" discs ever are because most "experimental" discs are not fun at all to listen to ever. Man, this band just rules at whatever they do, don't they?
