POWERWOLF - Blessed & Possessed

The hottest power metal property in Germany the last couple of years, has been these lampooning, corpse-painted, vestment/robe attired purveyors of religious hijinx, mixing Latin lyrics and vampire ethos while poking their fingers into the eyes of the holy hierarchy, via witty, albeit potentially incendiary ditties like "Sanctified With Dynamite", "Catholic In The Morning... Satanist At Night" and "Resurrection By Erection".

This sixth studio release shows no signs of stopping a winning formula, rhyming "raise your fist" with "Eucharist" in "We Are The Wild". The title track features the easy, call & response chorus that has helped make them such a live favorite. Beyond the military reference "Army Of The Night" borrows an infectious Sabaton stomp to maximum effect. While there's plenty of keyboard pop in their tunes, the liturgical organ adds the air of piety, so essential for skewering. Apart from "Dead Until' Dark", not many full-bore speeders within the early part of these eleven tongue-in-cheek irreverent hymns, although "Christ & Combat" and "All You Can Bleed" appear in the later half of the running order. Kneel at the altar of Powerwolf!
