PRIMITIV - Immortal & Vile

Straight outta Mumbai, India, Primitiv deliver the death-y goods here, once silly intro track “Clash Of The Gods” has come and gone, that is. And I like what first song proper “World War Zero” lays down, a very doom-immersed slog through heavy death metal, bringing to mind some of the slower death/faster doom bands of '91 in vibe and intent: a simple, blinders-on approach to death/doom that exists strictly to see who can trudge to the finish line in the middle of the heap. And, sure, Primitiv exist in the middle of the death/doom heap here, not up to a Hail Of Bullets sort of place yet, but definitely good enough to open for Hail Of Bullets, which is pretty impressive.

And it's not all on the doomier side of death: “The Demon Of Science” gets faster and blasts a bit, but I like it best when Primitiv keep things low and slow and grind their gears at a slower pace: it's where the band's power lies. Check out “Lake Rancid” and “Dead Man's Desert” and get immersed in the swampy battlefields; the only thing really missing is a production that's a bit uglier, a bit less separated, and with vocals not so distractingly loud in the mix. And, you know, here's the beauty of this particular battle: spin this a few times and you start to see that maybe Primitiv are actually already advancing past the aforementioned middle of the heap and are going to emerge victorious in this particular death/doom battle soon enough, the cool Crowbarian riffs of “Lords Of Primitiv” ending off this album with a fun flair.
