PSYCHOSTICK - IV: Revenge Of The Vengeance

Arizona humorcore band Psychostick is like the Jerry Seinfeld of metal. On its fourth full-length release, IV: Revenge of The Vengeance, the band’s sound invokes similarities to oddball artists such as Mr. Bungle, GWAR, Primus, Green Jello, Scatterbrain and Austrian Death Machine, to name a few. On its 21 ridiculous tracks (including various short skits between songs), the band explores its brand of observational comedy mixed with brutal breakdowns. The band exceeds expectations by parodying popular culture, relationships and binge drinking. Psychostick’s innovative usage of the word fuck on “NSFW” is funny as hell. And speaking of Green Jello, main man Bill Manspeaker lends a hand on this tune as well as a few other skits. An odd surprise is the band’s silly-yet-effective cover of Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone.” The quirky ode to the cult film actor Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead) on “Bruce Campbell” is a catchy, upbeat romper. The humorous Primus meets Pro-Pain chanting of “Obey The Beard,” which is littered with chunky down-tuned riffs and a groove-based rhythm section, ends with an epic list of people with epic beards. The Cookie Monster even makes an appearance (sort of) on “So. Heavy,” which in one part simulates the classic Isley Brothers’ song “Shout.” Although some tracks are just 20 to 30 second skits, there’s just a little too much too digest here. However, one shouldn’t be embarrassed to let out a few chuckles while listening to IV: Revenge of The Vengeance. Plus, the music is very catchy and heavy in all the right places.
