PSYCROPTIC - Psycroptic

I've been sitting with this one for a while now, and no matter how many times I spin it, this Australian death metal band sound like something different to me. For the longest time, it was like modern Decapitated, although not quite as terrible when it comes to the Meshuggah grooves or no-fun vibe. Then it turned into mid-period Death, the technical death reminding me of technical Death in all the best ways. Now I put it on and hear the straight-up hardcore yelping of Raised Fist. I guess there is all of the above in the band's sounds here on their sixth album, yet they do make it sound cohesive and with purpose.

It shreds pretty hard (see "The World Discarded"), but the overwhelming oppressive vibe becomes pretty hard to handle after a while, making this relatively concise album (38 minutes) feel a lot longer. And once the bar-band grooves kick in, you'll be kicking yourself for investing the emotional energy in trying to categorize this band, who go from Symbolic majesty to, yeah, bar-band groove just like that all over this frustrating and, occasionally, excellent album.
