RAVENEYE - Breaking Out

What do you get when you cross two Brits with an Aussie? A killer blues-rock trio, that’s what. UK-based RavenEye, consisting of guitarist/vocalist Oli Brown, drummer Kev Hickman and bassist Aaron Spiers, puts its best foot forward on its five-track debut EP, Breaking Out. Although RavenEye is mostly unknown on this side of the Atlantic, the three members are well-known for their individual musical endeavors throughout the UK.
RavenEye’s musical foundation is built on bluesy, sludgy-yet-modern rock riffs. The tracks are melodic and catchy with a heavy edge. From the funkified Zeppelin-infused title track, to the fuzzed-out riffs and infectiously-raucous chorus of “Get It Started”, to the meaty, Rage Against The Machine-laden riffs of “You Got It”, RavenEye captures a vibrant sound. However, often times they can sound a little too ready-made for commercial-rock radio (see “Hey Hey Yeah” and “Runaway”). On Breaking Out, RavenEye display a boatload of talent and promise. Hopefully these guys will release a full-length album in the near future, as this EP is over in a flash and leaves you wanting more. In the meantime, Breaking Out is a fabulous way to spend 18 minutes.
