REGARDE LES HOMMES TOMBER - Exile

France’s Regarde Les Hommes Tomber (“Watch the men fall”, in English) has entered the shark-infested, post-metal waters for album number two, this band taking the paradigm sutured together by Cult Of Luna more than a decade ago and elevating it to the type of towering heights another ten years of development logically leads to. Which is not to say that Exile is better than, say, Cult Of Luna’s epic and unmatched Vertikal, because it doesn’t possess that album’s level of grandeur.

But what Exile does do exceptionally well is convey the type of melancholy that is the hallmark of so much of metal’s raison d’être, and then drape it in black metal elements that allow this band’s whole to reflect both desolation and so many shards of glass. There’s been a big progression since Regarde Les Hommes Tomber’s self-titled 2013 debut, and Exile represents the work of a band clearly aiming for the summit of its artistic vision.
