ReverbNation Pick - EXSECROR VECORDIA

Exsecror Vecordia hails from Mexico and is one strange entity. Formed in 1999 and having released three full-length albums, they combine elements of black metal, power metal, add in some symphonic and gothic elements, shrieking and operatic vocals sung in Spanish, and toss it in a blender. It sounds about as smart as using a camel to travel across the sea, but it surprisingly works. The first couple songs presented by the band are a lot to digest. “Venérea” features aggressive riffing, orchestral, light passages, exquisite melodies and has a yin-yang like quality combining the darkest of the night and the brightest of the day. It is certainly something unique and it may sound disjointed at times, but the performances are admirable and a joy to listen to. “Hay Que Gritar La Locura Que Nos Mata” plays on the same type of instrumental passages as “Venérea”, but stays unique as the orchestral passages in the former are better put together and the use of the clarinet in the beginning added a nice medieval tone to it. There is again a cluster of different musical ideas thrown in, but it manages to stay a cohesive song. Exsecror Vecordia does not just revel in the long winded songs, but they also excel at shorter ones as well. “In Dreams”, sung in English, has a thrash metal vibe to it and the added symphonic elements with the operatic vocals work well with the hammering riffing. Another standout track is the piano driven “Lake Of Sorrow”. It starts mellow and seems like a softer song until the lake is washed out by the guttural vocals that invade the proceedings before an bluesy, emotive solo takes the song to its conclusion. Exsecror Vecordia is certainly a unique element in the metal scene and the best part is no two songs sound alike. I bet Forrest Gump would say “Exsecror Vecordia is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.”
