RIOT V - Unleash The Fire

When original Riot guitarist and long-standing band leader Mark Reale passed away in January 2012 from Crohn’s disease, it was obviously the end of the band, right? On the contrary; with Reale’s father’s blessing, longtime members Don Van Stavern (bass) and Mike Flyntz (guitars) has revived the band with an alternate moniker. Loaded with 12 classic-sounding Riot anthems, the album is fittingly dedicated to the late guitar slinger. Joining Van Stavern and Flyntz is powerhouse vocalist Todd Michael Hall (Burning Starr, Reverence), drummer Frank Gilchriest (Virgin Steele, Riot’s Army of One) and former Flyntz guitar student, Nick Lee. Since Riot’s 1974 formation, it has always boasted exceptional and unique singers; from original vocalist Guy Speranza, to Rhett Forrester, to Tony Moore, to Mike DiMeo (then Moore again), to current addition, Hall. Every Riot singer has brought something special to the table and Hall fits the bill nicely on Unleash The Fire, sounding right in line with Moore while adding his own flair. CD-opener “Ride Hard Live Free” immediately screams classic Riot. Carrying on the Johnny theme that first appeared on the song "Johnny's Back" from Thundersteel, “Metal Warrior” is a fitting continuation of the ongoing storyline. “Fall From The Sky” is spine-tingling with its gloriously-catchy chorus. “Immortal” is a melodic ballad dedicated to Reale. Its heartfelt lyrics will invoke various emotions and feelings. CD finale, “Until We meet Again,” is also a dedication to Reale. It’s a fitting tribute and a perfect ending to a great album which does the legacy of Riot justice.
