SAVAGE - 7/Live N Lethal

NWOBHM survivors, Savage, has weathered the storm of the early ’80s. Although they weren’t a household name throughout this time period, Savage managed to cultivate a cult following throughout its 37-year existence, while even enduring a decade-long dormant period. Savage’s debut album, Loose N Lethal (1983) became a cult classic and heavily influenced Metallica in its early developmental stages. On its seventh full-length release, 7, original members Chris Bradley (vocals/bass) and Andy Dawson (guitars) continue the classic Savage sound, making 7 as vibrant as ever. Its 10 tracks hearken back to the band’s early roots while also capturing a contemporary sound.

Opener “I Am The Law" immediately kicks things off with that classic ’80s British metal sound. "Lock N Load” continues the tone while "Super Spy” consists of an exuberant rhythm section, hard-charging bluesy riffs and soaring vocal harmonies on the chorus. The flavorful acoustic ballad "The Road To Avalon (Sins Of The Fathers)” slows the pace down a little bit but the rest of the band chime in at the 1:53 mark with a power driving riff and a memorable chorus. Indian tribal chants and drum beats greet "Crazy Horse” while "Children Of The Night” segues into a splendid Van Halen-ish rock segment at the 2:24 mark. The rumbling bottom end throughout the disc, which includes Bradley on bass and Mark Nelson on drums, is so frickin’ heavy that you’ll feel the pounding in your chest. 7 is coupled with Live & Lethal, which is a live interpretation of its debut album Loose N Lethal combined with newer songs. It’s a crisp and vibrant live recording, maybe just a little too clean, but it gives a great example of the energy the band exudes at a live show. NWOBHM aficionados and metal heads alike will dig 7 and will also be thrilled to know that Savage are still cranking out decent metal tunes after all these years. This is a must own disc!
