SAVAGE WIZDOM — A New Beginning

Father/son band Savage Wizdom from Santa Fe, New Mexico play a splendid mix of traditional and US power metal — the type that fits in well alongside progressive/power metal bands such as early Fates Warning, Omen, Iron Maiden and Iced Earth, to name a few. Formed in 2004, the band achieved a decent local following but never obtained national status and soon faded away after its 2007 debut release, No Time For Mercy. Original vocalist Steve Montoya and his son, bassist Steve Jr., create a one-two punch on the reformed band’s sophomore release, A New Beginning, its first in seven years. A New Beginning is a fitting title to the band’s latest chapter of its life. The band’s unbridled, old school, traditional metal approach is what’s endearing about Savage Wizdom; galloping Maiden riffs, dual guitar leads, a pounding rhythm section and Montoya's hi-pitched wails. They won’t change the face of metal by any means, but they present some well-constructed compositions worthy of days of metal yore. The 10 tracks are lengthy compositions that are majestic and epic in nature, and at 63 minutes, the album runs a little too long. However, the songs are so entertaining that there’s nary a dull moment. Oh, and former Maiden vocalist Blaze Bayley lends a hand on “Let It Go.” A New Beginning is real metal!
