SAVIOURS - Palace Of Vision

Look, I'm a lot like you: I can't tell the difference between Baptists and Saviours in my head, the two bands even having the same goddamn logo in my battered brain (and somehow I just end up daydreaming about Coliseum any time I start thinking about either of those two bands anyway), and whenever I listen to one of them I mainly think about what my current approximation of what the other one sounds like is. End result, no idea, even as I was watching, and very much enjoying, Baptists play live recently (let's set the record straight: Baptists are a much more intense hardcore band, while Saviours employ more of a current-Coliseum post-hardcore sound mixed with lots of twin-guitar rock riffing) (and where the hell is Kurt Ballou? Surely involved with one, both, or all of these bands...).

Anyway, now that I've spent most of this review talking about bands that really are not in the same sonic ballpark as Saviours (I think), happy to report that this new one from Saviours is a lot of fun, goes down smooth, the majesty of pure classic rock/trad metal riff carrying the songs along (seriously, if there are vocals, they are completely inconsequential), the band totally killing it during songs like “Cursed Night”, which lets the music do the talking in a very strong way. This sound always feels a bit jigsawed together, clearly a hardcore background clashing with an interest in classic rock, but just hone in on those killer riffs and this is a pretty good way to knock back 43 minutes. Saviours albums never tend to stick with me (although their debut was on regular rotation for a while after it came out), and I can't see this one being much different, but I can't deny Palace Of Vision's guitar glory.
