SCOTT IAN - Swearing Words In Glasgow

Having personally seen Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian perform his Swearing Words live show at The El Mocambo in Toronto back in February, it pleases me to say that nine months later, his routine is just as funny on DVD. Filmed in Scotland in 2013, this is the story of “a Jewish kid from Queens who started a heavy metal band.” After 30+ years of rocking audiences the world over, the idea of watching Scott on stage completely alone for two hours – no instruments, no music, no bandmates – just talking about his insane life, seems somewhat strange. But, Scott is a brilliant storyteller! The first half centers on Scott’s chance encounter with Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead; the drinks they had… and the aftermath!

As Scott recounts tale after glorious tale, a series of slides adorn the screen behind him, adding immeasurable value to what quickly becomes an unbelievably entertaining experience. “You can’t un-remember” the dialogue involving moviemaker Steven Spielberg (Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park) and Ministry’s Al Jourgensen. Then, the story of the Dimebag Darrell / Sebastian Bach phone call takes a while to tell, but is absolutely hilarious; with revenge being just as sweet! Opening the floor to questions from the audience, Scott shares shenanigans involving Gene Simmons of KISS, Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P., C.C. DeVille of Poison, Jeff Hanneman from Slayer, and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Extra footage (from the same night) details debacles with shrooms and weed. Admittedly, there is some overlap with Scott’s autobiography I’m The Man, but realistically that was unavoidable. There’s no question about it, Swearing Words will make you laugh! After wiping away tears of joy, the realization that you learned a thing or two sinks in. Captivating and charismatic, Scott makes it feel like you were actually there when all this craziness went down.
