SEPULCHRAL TEMPLE - Sepulchral Temple

This debut EP from UK-based Sepulchural Temple ain't an easy listen: first song is 8:18, second song ("Outro") is 0:37; third song ("Sepulchural Temple," love when bands do that) is 6:27, fourth song (uh, "Outro") is 0:53. So without even hitting "play" I'm a bit confused and intimidated. Luckily, the music is surprisingly welcoming, if you like doom-drenched raw death metal, that is. This EP, which first came out on vinyl in 2013 on Iron Bonehead, shows the band's many sounds, often at the exact same time, as on the opening "Salvific Dance," which goes slow like old Celtic Frost while bringing to mind more modern sludge/doom, then from-the-sewer mid-tempo and grinding DM, and a surprising blackthrash kind of wailing, like trad metal gone horribly Teutonic. Like I say, this is all happening simultaneously. So, skip past "Outro" (what, you listen to those things?) and on to the next song proper, and it starts off with a raging guitar solo over some blast beats, and, man, game on. It took me a couple listens to get this, to understand how to process it (and for a guy who's been listening to death metal for a very, very long time, that's saying something), but once I did, the enjoyment factor here skyrocketed. So, skip past "Outro" (stop that, Sepulchural Temple) and face the realization that your day is about to get a whole lot more normal now that this is over. Looking forward to a full-length from these boundary-pushing freakies.
