SIRIUN - In Chaos We Trust

Bit of a strange ride here from Brazilian groove/deathsters Siriun, this album hopping between big Cavalerean grooves and a swirling take on death metal, with stops along the way for some acoustic geographic-specific sounds. Lots of variety, and of course that means it's a damn headache, songs like "Transmutation" managing to incorporate so many different genres into one relatively short burst (there are even near-blast parts in there) it's just... yeah, a headache, but I give 'em points for trying. Lots of points, actually: they get six for being awesome on their instruments and for producing some interesting songwriting ideas here, and the delivery on what they're doing is great. Unfortunately, I can't shake the feeling that what is really happening here is a groove metal band just trying to shake off the remnants of a death metal past (drummer Kevin Talley has done time in Suffocation and Daath), and while I don't just want a generic -ion DM album, I also don't want something that is one bounce-step away from jumpingdafuckup while opening for Soulfly at the local dive bar. Curious to see what direction Siriun will take next time out, or if they'll manage to create their own cool little niche; could happen, but for now they sound tentative and... yeah, there's just a bit too much bounce preventing the death metal from really connecting.
