SISTER SIN - Black Lotus

Swedish, female-fronted metal band Sister Sin has a good thing going. Its brand of old-school metal with an American sleazy rock swagger is showcased on its fifth full-length release, Black Lotus. Consisting of nine tracks at 37 minutes, it’s the perfect duration. Led by Liv Jagrell’s raspy and lusty vocals, the band delivers traditional ’80s metal riffs, driving rhythms, anthemic choruses with a defiant, fist-in-the-air attitude. Along with Jagrell, guitarist Jimmy Hiltula, bassist Andreas Strandh and drummer Dave Sundberg has captured a loyal fan base. Sister Sin’s “fight for what you believe in” lyrics has always been a staple of the band, and on songs “Chaos Royale” and “Ruled By None,” they continue this theme. Jagrell has often been compared to Doro Pesch, and her vocal delivery is very effective with this genre of music. Sister Sin does what they do well on Black Lotus; which is no frills, balls-out traditional metal. Since its 2002 formation, the band has seen a steady incline, but unfortunately, they aren’t as revered in North America as they are in most of Europe and Scandinavia. However, with the release of Black Lotus, the band makes a legitimate effort to break out in the States.
