SLASH – Live At The Roxy

The Roxy in Hollywood, California is a legendary venue in its own right, boasting 40+ years of rock history. The club also holds special significance for Slash as it was one of the bars where he got his start when Guns N’ Roses played there in ’85 and ’86; prior to the release of Appetite For Destruction. Now the man underneath the top hat has come full circle. On September 25, 2014, Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators treated 500 fans to a hot and sweaty, once in a lifetime experience. Those up front couldn’t get any closer to the band; there were no barricades or security guards, just the audience and the five guys on stage. The main program on this must-have DVD / Blu-ray is comprised of 13 tracks, including five GN’R tunes and one from Velvet Revolver.

Slash embarks upon an extended, improvised guitar solo during “Rocket Queen” while the Canadian rhythm section of bassist Todd Kerns and drummer Brent Fitz hold down the groove. Performing “You’re A Lie” and “World On Fire” back to back is the best 1-2 knockout combo imaginable. Then, Slash straps on the double-neck Guild for a beautiful rendition of “Anastasia”. Four bonus tracks from the same show are tacked onto the end; it’s unclear as to why they’re labeled bonus, seeing as they boast the same top-notch video and audio quality. Todd Kerns sings lead vocal on “You’re Crazy”, while “30 Years To Life” simply blows you away. That being said, the double CD release of Live At The Roxy features two more songs that are nowhere to be found on the DVD / Blu-ray, specifically “Halo” and “Doctor Alibi”. However, what is presented is extremely enjoyable. Also included is a full-colour, eight page booklet. True bonus footage in the form of interviews with Slash, Myles, and The Conspirators would have been appreciated.
