TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION - Dark Side Of Black

Texas Hippie Coalition (THC) delivers Southern fried, testosterone-fueled metal on its fourth full-length release, Dark Side Of Black. Big boss/big hoss, Big Dad Ritch, is one bad ass vocalist with a whiskey-soaked croon. Combining Pantera-esque grooves with Blackfoot-inspired Southern rock and its own brand of outlaw rock, THC is very convincing on its ten tracks.

Opener “Come Get It” is a good example of THC’s metallic, southern-tinged metal, almost sounding like a long lost cousin of Hell Yeah! However, “Angel Fall” is quintessential THC. The combination of taunting vocals, soaring melodic guitar and vocal harmonies work so well together, not to mention that mesmerizing chorus. The bluesy, sludgy swagger of “Shakin’ Baby” would fit in perfectly blaring from the juke box of a bad-ass biker bar or seedy strip club. The Molly Hatchet/Allman Brothers-esque “Knee Deep” really explores the band’s Southern roots admirably by possessing great storytelling, which fits the mood of the song perfectly. From the brotherhood vibe of “Rise,” to the outlaw theme of “Villain,” to the raucous “Into The Wall,” THC creates a fun rocking affair that will invoke you to shake your fist, give an angry shout or want to kick someone’s head in. Although On Dark Side Of Black isn’t flawless, the band has proven they are capable of reaching a new level of recognition. This is one fun, shit-kickin’ album!
