THE BLACKCLOUD SYNDICATE - Rage In Common

From the ashes of defunct Toronto-area metal acts, Absolute Zero and Endless, The Blackcloud Syndicate has risen to unleash its brand of heartfelt anger. The band’s combination of high-charged hardcore and powerful thrash metal is well-executed on its five-track debut EP, Rage In Common. The band’s varied musical approach allows it to incorporate a wide range of aggressive influences, recalling bands such as Suicidal Tendencies, Pro-Pain, DRI, System Of A Down and Bad Brains, to name a few. Leading off from a count of four, CD-opener “Clenched” immediately charges out of the gate with distorted, chugging riffs and a rumbling rhythm section. You’re pretty much hooked right away due to its infectious stomp and groove. “Fault Lines” begins with a blood-curdling scream, followed by frenetic riffs and a thunderous drum pattern. The band’s hardcore influences come to the forefront on “Vice Grips,” sounding like a cross between Cro-Mags and Bad Brains. The band’s intensity level rises to 11 on the energetic “Protest The Riot,” while the six-plus minute CD closer “Gift Of Design,” including a cool acoustic guitar intro, ends in fine fashion. Rage In Common proves to be a nice, 22-minute punch in the face. The CD version of the album also includes a sludgy cover version of Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell.”
