TITANS EVE - Chasing The Devil

Vancouver modern thrashers, Titans Eve, has taken slow, measured steps in its climb to regional recognition in the Western Canadian underground metal scene since its 2008 inception. On its third full-length release, Chasing The Devil, the band, consisting of brothers Brian (guitar/vocals) and Kyle Gamblin (guitar), Jesse Hord (bass) and Casey Ory (drums), continues its unique brand of modern metal. Combining ’80s thrash-isms, modern metal passages, touches of NWOBHM and generous amounts of Thin Lizzy/Iron Maiden-inspired harmonized guitar leads, Titans Eve cull these elements together with a vibrant approach. Chasing The Devil’s eight tracks are compact and concise, decorated with huge, chantable choruses.

CD-opener “We Defy” embodies all the above-mentioned musical elements thoroughly, displaying a High On Fire/Revocation-influenced, mid-paced punchiness, while the Death Angel/Testament-infused “War Path” is full of old school thrash elements combined with modern metal components similar to bands such as Trivium and Shadows Fall. Chasing The Devil doesn’t have the raw edge that the band’s debut The Divine Equal has, but the band sounds more seasoned and exceptionally tight here. Brian Gamblin’s raspy shouts, accompanied by some robust gang chants, aren’t particularly very melodic, but they mix well with the band’s modern metal tendencies. However, the production, which was handled by the band and Eric Mosher, sounds a bit muffled, especially the rhythm section, while the guitars are presented front and center. Chasing The Devil isn’t flawless, but Titans Eve are doing a lot of things right.
