TVIVLER - Negativ Psykologi #2

This Danish band is kicking off their career conceptually with a trilogy of 7”s, of which this is the second. And, man, hard to put your finger on what's happening here, which is great: the melodies and song structure are not metallic in the slightest, bringing to mind instead '90s post-hardcore, but with a decidedly Euro screamo edge. And there's lots of interesting experimentation, with guitar lines leading the way into a place where bands like Refused go during their quieter moments, and where the best post-hardcore bands of DC go in their heavier moments.

I love it when the band picks up the rock and kicks down the 4/4, as on “Voldsom” or the closing of “Overflod,” which brings cool '90s hardcore-emo guitar work to the table. Going between the quieter moments and the louder sounds balances out this EP very well; the only thing bringing this one down are the vocals, which are just too persistent and not as impactful as the music demands they should be. But, give 'em time; this is their second EP, and this is a very enjoyable 11 minutes of what we'll call, for a lack of a more suitable term existing, post-hardcore, the band proving themselves adept at the experimentation, introspection, and rockin' out that the term brings with it at the best of times.
