VARIOUS ARTISTS - 4 Doors To Death

Cool concept here, a four-way split throwing back to the old days of death metal in both concept and title; the sounds here definitely throw back, as well. Cemetery Filth start things off with three tunes of their Obituary-lovin' Floridian death stomp; the band, comin' atcha from Tennessee and Georgia, definitely like it simple and heavy, and they drag us through their swamps with much to believe in here, the band doing both the slower thing and the speedier thing with ease, definitely kicking off this disc with a solid '91 flair. Alabama's Ectovoid are up next, with two songs of their considerably denser and more Incantation-loving take on bass-drenched sewer death; difficult in all the best ways, this band also shows considerable promise here. So, halfway through and both bands are hovering between good and better than good: not bad at all.

Representing Canada is Winnipeg's Sabbatory, whose two tunes at first sound positively lightweight compared to Ectovoid's crushing approach, but that feeling quickly subsides as the band, who clearly have a love for Obituary on the vocal front, lay down solid '91 DM with a bit of a more frantic attack. It's just raw and energetic enough to be pretty great, which means we're three for three here. Closing it off is a trio of tunes from Philadelphia's Trenchrot, who deliver a bit of all of the above, starting off slow and dragging the sewers, then going into a more uptempo Obituary stomp; they have a tough job being the closer here, but they pull it off like all the bands, doing a classic sound with just a touch of personality. They shut it down with a cover of Death's “Evil Dead”, which is completely appropriate on this release. Man, how did Unspeakable Axe find four bands who play old school USDM but manage to NOT make it boring? Great job, and this cool collection showcases four bands totally worth keeping an eye on.
