VINNIE MOORE - Aerial Visions

His solo debut (commemorated by the name of this label), remains one of my favorite instrumental guitar albums (alongside Jason Becker/Marty Friedman's initial Shrapnel/Cacophony efforts and Joey Tafolla's Out Of The Sun), a once populated field that has grown out of favor. Thus, all the aforementioned attempted to (re)join established bands and continue issuing personal discs, when the time was right. Witness Moore, part of UFO for the last dozen years.

“Mustang Shuffle” comes out of the chute like some revved up honky tonk, but quickly changes over to legitimate guitar. Easily the best rock track of the ten. After another speedster (“Now's The Time”), an emotive “Faith” and jazzy “Slam” follow. The cover of ZZ Top's “La Grange” (one of my all-time favorite guitar tracks) is spirited, although the muted guitar tones are a bit odd. All the same, I'll take the original, thanks. “Looking Back”, has a classical music feel, in structure, although completely modern, electrified guitar. Mixed with a slice of fusion, the title kicks it up to at least mid-tempo. “The Dark Dream” is a little aggressive, but nothing sinister, and “Calling Out” trots out the wah wah pedal. All but two tunes finish in under five minutes, with the disc closing, acoustic begun “A Million Miles Gone” a few seconds from seven. Interesting listen, once, but doubtful worthy of plays.
