WEDNESDAY 13 - Undead Unplugged

Horror punk icon Wednesday 13 has stripped away the flesh and drained all of the blood, leaving behind a set of exquisite musical skeletons that comprise his first acoustic album. Beginning with a newly-penned, two-minute introductory tune aptly named “Undead”, what follows on Undead Unplugged is bare bones versions of W13 fan favourites, as well as a brief descent into the back catalogue of Wednesday’s previous bands - Murderdolls and Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13. All tracks on this release were recorded in February 2014, yet including “Curse Of Me” is somewhat redundant as an alternate acoustic version appeared on 2012’s Spook & Destroy EP. The vocal on “Haunt Me” unfortunately comes across as a forced, spooky whisper rather than Wednesday’s natural tone, which works just as well with or without amplified guitars and drums. That being said, the reimagining of “Nowhere” is fantastic, while the transformation of “Morgue Than Words” is simply incredible, invoking an almost Johnny Cash-like feel. W13 guitarist Jack Tankersley adds lead work to a handful of numbers including the always enjoyable “Scary Song”, as well as the brilliantly revised “Ghost Stories” from last year’s Dixie Dead.
