WEIRD LIGHT - Doomicvs Vobiscvm

Get a load of this cool gem, Shadow Kingdom unearthing French doom band Weird Light's only recording, 2007's two-song Doomicvs Vobiscvm demo, and adding two unreleased tunes to it; doesn't sound like much, but that adds up to 42 minutes of very quality Sabbath- and Candlemass-loving trad doom. Opener “Obsidian Temple” starts off doing the slow march of, you guessed it, doom, but then, after you've suffered in the most wonderful of ways through three minutes of that, it steps it up to a truly '70s-Sab double-time doom shuffle; listen to it and don't tap your foot, your hand, your head, something... impossible.

The next cut, “GogMagog (Under The Trumpets Of Doom)” could easily wear out its welcome at a lesser band's hands, considering it's almost 14 minutes long. But, man, it works: the song just goes on and on, but the riffs are so good, no one's complaining, and you never really look at your watch because, hey, you knew what you were signing up for, and Weird Light do it excellently here, this song evoking the majesty of first-album Cathedral. The final two tracks prove that Weird Light do both slow and slower as well as anyone, closer “Stare In The Dark” being especially powerful. Shadow Kingdom was ready to release this band's debut, but they broke up before it happened; that's a shame, but this release does a good job of summing up what this cool, capable band were all about.
