ANVIL's Lips - "It Has Been An Everyday Struggle For Us"
July 21, 2009, 15 years ago
Rockpages.gr spoke with Lips from ANVIL regarding the extremely successful DVD release The Story of Anvil. Here's an excerpt where Lips talks in details about the tough times that the band went through:
Q: Both the DVD and the book are really remarkable. Especially, the DVD shows what you and Robb are going through with the labels, the promoters, the managers etc. Is it really an everyday struggle for you?
A: It has been! I mean, in a way, the DVD speaks volumes for all the other bands in the world that are trying to make it big and earn a living from music. In this business, there isn’t a grey area... if you don’t make it you have to persist and that’s a struggle! It’s simple as that..."
Q: I remember back in 2005 when you were here for a number of shows, you were doing this interview in a tavern and you told me that This Is Thirteen was being prepared but you didn’t know if it will come out from a label. Now, you are distributing the album through your page. Did you get tired of searching and you said "that this is the right way to do it...”?
A: "Well, I guess so... the CD is not strictly distributed through our website. There is also a limited edition of the DVD that includes the album. It is the UK import... I don’t know what will happen to the rest of Europe and to tell you the truth I am not sure if I want to be involved in such a shitty situation... the DVD describes the whole thing in a perfect way. You give everything you have and then the labels ignore you. That’s a shame... You know, by producing the DVD and distributing the book ourselves, we had gained more money than we ever had in the past. So, I am kinda hesitant to give my hard earned money to a label that will probably do nothing about my work. The fan can get the stuff directly from us and know for sure that the band is getting all the money. It’s a good deal... the fan will get the CD directly from us straight to his mailbox."
