MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine spoke to Al Kratina from The Montreal Gazette recently about a number of topics just prior to his band's appearance at Montreal's Heavy MTL which takes place at Jean Drapeau Park today and tomorrow. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

Mustaine on his early years: "That whole period, going from PANIC to METALLICA to Megadeth, that seemed like it was over in the blink of an eye. One day, I'm a teenager playing in a backyard beer-keg party band, the next day I'm in a rehearsal room starting one of the greatest heavy metal bands in the world. And then a year later, I'm in one of the second-greatest heavy metal bands in the world."

Mustaine on Rust In Peace: "People talk about Rust In Peace as a pivotal record in their lives. I don't know. I mean, to me, the songs are the same, they're aggressive, they have the same kind of similar progressions in them, the same kind of mentality. (But) that might just be lack of depth in my songwriting."

Mustaine's approach to songwriting: "You can play with aggression and you can play fast, (but) it's kind of like the act of being with your loved one. You can't just keep going full force, full speed ahead the whole time. You have to do the dance ... it has to climax."
