DORO Drummer Johnny Dee – “It Seems Like Everyone Is Looking For Something Other Than The Fucking Music To Talk About”
September 2, 2011, 13 years ago
The Examiner.com recently conducted an interview with DORO drummer Johnny Dee. In the interview Dee talks about his career and more. Excerpts from the interview are below:
The Examiner.com: For someone who has been around as long as you have, with as many ups and downs success-wise as any stalwart in the business, do you have any theories as to why you continually fly under the radar with regards to media attention?
Johnny Dee: “I’m the Rodney Dangerfield of rock! I mean, what is there to talk about other than that I haven’t fucked a supermodel and I haven’t gotten hooked on heroin. It seems like everyone is looking for something other than the fucking music to talk about. I’ve been doing this for over twenty-five years, too, but I’m okay with it. It was never really a big thing for me; if it had been and dropped off, then I might be offended, you know?
I’ve never really had any major coverage in drum magazines; I just see myself as the workhorse, just doing my thing. Once in a while someone will pop up and say, “Thank you!” And that means more to me than any kind of ‘flavor of the month’ thing. I try to look at everything realistically and take the positives from it rather than the negatives.”
The Examiner.com: That’s also what I find fascinating about you. While you are doing great things with Doro, who is an international rock star in just about every country but America, you don’t limit yourself or your abilities to just that. Following you on Facebook can get dizzying. One day, you post 'I’m recording with Chris Caffery,' and the next day, you say, 'Come check me out in Delaware with The ELECTRIC BOA.'”
Johnny Dee: “Right, right! [Laughs] It’s the same concept, really. If I didn’t like to do it, I probably wouldn’t. I would find something else to occupy my time. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to stay in this, and sometimes it’s not easy, but you just have to keep at it. I have to keep playing drums just to have the physical stamina to stay up for it. 'Oh, we have a gig in Russia!' That’s a 20-hour flight, and to do that and do a Doro show, I have to keep my physical ability as close to top shape as possible. Playing drums is a physical trade; it’s almost like a contact sport.
Watching Doro is actually very motivational for me, because she’s up there with the hardest job, using her voice and keeping everyone fired up. And she doesn’t pamper herself at all. She’s not sitting there before a gig, sipping tea, and saying 'I don’t want to talk to so-and-so.' She will literally do every interview that comes her way; she’ll talk to every fan until they’ve got everything they want from her. She will completely wipe herself out and STILL do a two-and-a-half hour gig! There is no way I cannot be inspired by that!”

In 2008, Doro Pesch celebrated her 25th anniversary concert at the ISS Dome in her hometown of Dusseldorf, Germany. With over 8,500 people in attendance, the magical, full-documented performance included guest appearances by OVERKILL’s Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth, GRAVE DIGGER’s Chris Boltendahl, former NIGHTWISH singer Tarja Turunen, SCORPIONS’ Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker, Liv Kristine (LEAVES’ EYES), Floor Jansen (AFTER FOREVER), Axel Rudi Pell and many others. The set was recorded in its entirety and resulted in the mammoth 25 Years In Rock two-DVD/CD set which includes the once-in-a-lifetime concert as well as out-takes from Doro's 2,500th concert and more. 25 Years In Rock will finally be available to North American fans on September 13th via Nuclear Blast Records.
