EXODUS Frontman STEVE "ZETRO" SOUZA On New Album's Vocals - "My Whole Purpose Was To Be The Best I Could Be And Reinvent Myself, To Change It Up A Little Bit"; Audio
October 12, 2021, 3 years ago
Exodus return with their eleventh studio album, Persona Non Grata, out November 19 via Nuclear Blast Records. Dimitris Kontogeorgakos of the Chicago-based webzine Metal Kaoz recently conducted an interview with frontman Steve "Zetro" Souza, who talked about the creation of Persona Non Grata.
Zetro said the following when asked to describe his singing style on the album: "I was all over the map with my voice on this one. I did that purposely. My whole purpose was to be the best I could be and reinvent myself, to change it up a little bit. So, that’s basically what I went for. Gary and I talked about this last summer; when he and Tom were going doing jam camp and write the basic core of the songs, he was like ‘I want you to do some different stuff in this album’, and I was like, ‘I’m actually listening to a lot of Behemoth and Lamb Of God lately, so it’d be a good way to do it’. So, I implemented a lot of what I was listening to at the time to what I did in Persona Non Grata and I think I did it enough - I didn’t overdo it. It’s definitely me but there’s some piece of death vocals, some piece of hardcore vocals, there’s some singing stuff in there, there’s some total Gothenburg, Arch Enemy/At The Gates-type of thing. That’s definitely happened due to people we admire as well.”

Literally translating to “an unwelcome” or “unacceptable” person, Persona Non Grata touches on themes of modern societal disgust and degradation. The band gathered at Tom Hunting's house in the mountains where they produced and recorded Persona Non Grata from three home-built studios . Steve Lagudi was at the helm of engineering while the band enlisted Andy Sneap of Backstage Studios to mix the album. For the third time in the band’s history, they returned to Swedish artist Par Olofsson to create the album artwork.
