FRANK ZAPPA - Classic Feature Film To Be Issued On DVD!
November 13, 2003, 17 years ago
This December, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release FRANK ZAPPA’s acclaimed film Baby Snakes on DVD for the first time. A “movie about people who do stuff that is not normal,” Baby Snakes provides on and offstage glimpses of arcane behavior engaged in by Zappa and fellow musicians.
Winning first prize at The First International Festival of Musical Films in 1981, and First Prize in a French Animation Film Competition, Baby Snakes became an instant cult hit when it premiered at the Victoria Theatre in Times Square NYC during Christmas week of 1979 (the film ran 24 hours a day throughout the week). Baby Snakes will be available December 9th, 2003.
Eagle Rock will support the release of Baby Snakes with screenings in major markets and a theatrical run in select theaters. Eagle Rock will coordinate radio giveaways on nationally syndicated radio programs and classic rock and mainstream radio stations. P.O.P available will include retail posters, e-cards and web banners.
Eagle Rock will target Zappa fans with retailer tagged ads in music publications. Eagle Rock will also launch a comprehensive Internet campaign, targeting Frank Zappa fan sites as well as mainstream music and entertainment web sites with banner ads and contests.
Ever see a hamburger eat a guy’s face before? Part of the stuff that is “not normal” in the film includes unique and bizarre claymation from Bruce Bickford, including the famous segment in which a guy with a hamburger for a head consumes the guy sitting next to him. Zappa fans will clamor for this rare and unique opportunity to experience classic Zappa tracks included in the film, such as ‘Baby Snakes’, ‘Curse Of The Knick-Knack People’ and ‘City Of Tiny Lights’. The live footage from Zappa’s 1978 Halloween concert at the Palladium Theater in New York City will not fail to disappoint fans of Zappa’s master showmanship. Co-conspirators include fellow musicians Adrian Belew, Terry Bozzio, Roy Estrada, Patrick O’Hearn, Tommy Mars, Ed Mann and Peter Wolf, who were assisted by the legendary John Smothers.
Baby Snakes was written, produced, directed and composed by Frank Zappa. For production of the DVD, Gail Zappa acted as Executive Producer for the Concept and Art Direction. The 5.1 Soundtrack was produced by Dweezil Zappa, who also created special art for the project. Vaultmeister Joe Travers uncovered a previously unreleased 4-channel mix for the movie soundtrack. From this mix, Dweezil Zappa, Joe Travers and Kent Huffnagle collaborated to create the 5.1 Audio Mix.
