Canada.com's Al Kratina caught up with MEGADETH frontman Dave Mustaine prior to the band's July 24th appearance at the Heavy MTL festival in Montreal, Quebec. An excerpt from the story is available below.

With 12 studio albums, including 2009's critically acclaimed Endgame, Megadeth is indeed one of the world's biggest metal bands, with high speed, aggressive guitar riffs anchoring lyrics of guns, politics and conspiracies, like talk radio station going to war. Mustaine's signature snarl, delivered with all the venom of a necrotizing viper, is instantly recognizable. And his guitar solos are the envy of many musicians, to the point that he was recently given the No. 1 slot in music journalist Joel McIver's The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists.

In Montreal, Mustaine and Megadeth will channel that talent through a planned performance of 1990s platinum-selling classic Rust In Peace in its entirety.

"People talk about Rust in Peace as a pivotal record in their lives," says Mustaine, though he admits he's not sure why the album has become such a fan favourite.

"I don't know. I mean, to me, the songs are the same, they're aggressive, they have the same kind of similar progressions in them, the same kind of mentality," he muses, before laughing. "(But) that might just be lack of depth in my songwriting."

Mustaine credits his style to a somewhat amorous songwriting approach, though he describes it with surprising delicacy.

"You can play with aggression and you can play fast," he explains, "(but) it's kind of like the act of being with your loved one. You can't just keep going full force, full speed ahead the whole time. You have to do the dance ... it has to climax."
