hot flashes news my ruin

In a new interview with BW&BK; scribe Carl Begai, MY RUIN vocalist Tairrie B. Murphy broke down some of the tracks featured on the band's new album, A Southern Revelation. Following is a look inside the BLACK SABBATH-flavoured crusher, 'A Soulless Beast', a song written about and for Tiefdruck Musik label boss Daniel Heerdman, who stifled the release of the band's previous album, Ghosts And Good Stories.

Tairrie: “For me, 'The Soulless Beast', 'Middle Finger' and 'Tennessee Elegy' are the meat of the album for me lyrically. They encompass the theme of the album. 'The Soulless Beast' was a song I worked on when we were in LA, and I wrote it several times because I couldn't get it where I wanted it. In the beginning I wanted to write it like a biblical parable, but I wasn't sure where I wanted to go with it. It wasn't until we got to Knoxville, Tennessee (where the album was recorded), and it's the funniest thing because we were staying with (guitarist/husband) Mick's family, and his mother pulled out her bible and some religious books for inspiration. I started to read the Book Of Revelation, and I hadn't read it in a really long time. It was like I was having my own revelation. This is our seventh album, and the number seven figures very prominently in there. The Book Of Daniel is part of it, and it was like, 'You've got to be kidding me!" It started unfolding itself and I started thinking about how the Beast is the abomination that causes desolation, which is what we were dealing with. So, the Book Of Revelation took center stage for me.”

“The other thing I really love about this album is that it's got a very heavy spoken vibe. I've been doing spoken work for many, many years and I've incorporated it on a lot of our albums, but I wanted to get a bit heavier with that on this record. I didn't want to make it a full-on screaming record. I think 'The Soulless Beast' really comes through with that style in there, breathing the vibe and energy of our spoken word project THE LVRS in there, which I really like.”

The complete interview will be online soon.

My Ruin recently released a video for the song 'Tennessee Elegy'. It is available below.

The new video, which features Luciano Ferrea on bass and new drummer Isaac Lee (who is the latest addition to the My Ruin familia) was co-directed by vocalist Tairrie B along with former My Ruin drummer Marcelo Palomino of MFP Film Productions, and Tor Burrows of Notorious Design. Marcelo also filmed the video and handled all the camera work while the editing and special effects were done by Tor Burrows who created My Ruin’s previous two videos for ‘Long Dark Night’ and ‘Excommunicated’ from their 2010 album Ghosts and Good Stories.

"We pride ourselves on being a DIY band and have no label supporting us, so we really had no budget for this video. It was truly a labor of rock love and faith in friendships that helped to create ‘Tennessee Elegy’ and there was a lot of team work behind the scenes,” according to Tairrie B. “Marcelo has been a close friend of mine for many years and was also my original drummer when I started out in my first band MANHOLE in the early '90s. We’ve wanted to collaborate on a video for My Ruin for a while but it never seemed to be the right time until now. Celo is based in LA and we had a lot of fun shooting the video with him. Tor is based in the UK and there is the 8 hour time difference so we have learned to utilize Skype and Dropbox as our way of working together. She is a longtime fan turned friend who really understands our band and music deeply. Her attention to detail in bringing our songs to life by the use of interesting effects and iconic imagery with me is truly inspiring. The videos we create together feel very sacred and timeless which is also how we like to think of our albums."
