Just back from a sold-out tour through North America, Soilwork, Europe’s biggest metal-export, are back home in Sweden to record the follow-up to their mega seller Stabbing The Drama. Bass player Ola Flink recently took some time to chat with Gibson about life holding down the bottom of one of metal's heaviest bands.

Gibson: What was your first musical experience?

Ola: "When I was about 15, my friends had some kind of a band, and they were hanging out in a basement trying to learn how to play their instruments. They had everything except a bass player so they were like, 'Hey Flink you got big hands, you should be able to handle a bass.' So I tried and I kind of sucked, but I didn’t give up."

Gibson: How did you first step into the spotlight?

Ola: "I joined Soilwork in 1996, and about that time we got a record deal. We have released six albums so far and are working on the seventh at the moment. It’s a dream come true."

Gibson: What basses do you use?

Ola: "Well I've got two Gibson Thunderbirds, one Black and one Sunburst. I haven't had them that long, but I really love them. They feel great to play and they are just the nicest looking basses ever made!"

Gibson: Do you have a favorite?

Ola: "That has to be the black one, the one I use as my main bass."

Gibson: What is the coolest thing that has ever happened to you on the road?

Ola: "Well one cool thing was when Bill Ward of BLACK SABBATH came to our show at the House of Blues in Anaheim. He walked in to the dressing room after the show and talked to us for a while and said that he really liked the band. That was pretty nice. He is a really cool guy and we always liked Sabbath.

I also saw him standing in front of me in the food line when we played Ozzfest. He was the only one you would see there from Black Sabbath.

Other than that, it’s just the usual alcohol-flavored stories. You meet tons of crazy people on the road over the years; I guess the overall experience of being on tour is pretty weird."

Gibson: What projects do you have coming up that we can look forward to?

Ola: "At the moment we are writing songs for our seventh album, but besides that, I have some other ideas growing in my head that I am going to make real in the near future. Be prepared!"

(Thanks Christof)
