David Gold, frontman and founder of Canadian doomsters WOODS OF YPRES, is featured in a new interview with BeatRoute.ca's Sarah Kitteringham. He discusses the band's recent signing to Earache Records after four independently released albums. An excerpt from the story is

available below.

“After eight and a half years of doing this band independently, and ever since the beginning, always being on the edge of something bigger happening, but always on the edge but a little bit short, the time came that we finally had some good news and I think that for our own entertainment we thought it would be fun to announce we were tired and broken and giving up, finally, and then we let everybody sit with that for a few days, and then of course announced the news that we had created that news and were signed,” reveals Gold.

These antics seemed to really piss off some of the message board trolls, who have taken a dislike to Woods due to the band’s ever-changing sonic assault that has transformed from traditional black metal with gruff howls, to blackened doom featuring morose clean vocals sprinkled with shrieks.

“That’s just going to happen. I think what’s always kept me grounded on that is obviously I’ve always been a huge TYPE O NEGATIVE fan, and I have been for years,” says Gold. “You’d always see people online, especially metal heads, who would just hate Type O Negative and hate Peter Steele and I always thought maybe those guys who hate Peter Steele so much are secretly attracted to him, or envious of him or jealous that women are attracted to him.”
