BLACK LABEL SOCIETY - Skullage

Available in three different formats: CD, DVD and CD/DVD combo pack, Skullage is the newest greatest hits package from guitar legend Zakk Wylde. Although the DVD has a running time just shy of two hours, it’s disappointingly short on new material. Four stellar live performances kick things off. Only problem is, the first was pulled from the 2006 BLS DVD, Doom Troopin: The European Invasion, and the remaining three are culled from the 2003 BLS DVD, Boozed, Broozed & Broken-Boned. Five music videos follow. Once again, the first four originally appeared on the aforementioned DVDs, leaving ‘New Religion’ as the sole clip unique to this collection. Unfortunately, the video section is far from complete: ‘Counterfeit God’, ‘Blood Is Thicker Than Water’ and the animated ‘Concrete Jungle’ are all missing. Up next is the Slightly Amped feature, touted as “never before seen.” Talk about a misleading statement! This footage showcases Zakk and fellow guitarist Nick Catanese performing four songs acoustically on The Blessed Hellride promotional tour – thing is, the ‘We Live No More’ and ‘Stillborn’ versions are included on Boozed, Broozed & Broken-Boned. Rounding out the DVD is a brand new, must-see 20-minute interview with Zakk – Welcome To The Compound. With his unique sense of humour on full-throttle, Wylde takes viewers inside his home, revealing the inspiration behind the biggest BLS songs. Onto the CD – Skullage houses 16 Zakk staples. Since Kings Of Damnation, the initial best-of from 2005, BLS released one new studio album, Shot To Hell, in ’06, thereby not really justifying another career retrospective. Thankfully, only two songs appear on both discs: ‘Bleed For Me’ and ‘Stillborn’. The Skullage CD also contains the audio of the Slightly Amped segment from the DVD. Essentially, this is great for new chapter members but for those SDMFs who’ve been around since the beginning, Skullage simply serves as a refresher course.
