CAVE IN - Jupiter

This is not a metal record, but seeing as how Cave In's first disc, the brilliant "Until Your Heart Stops," was, they'll probably always end up in the metal section of magazines. Occasionally the band will throw in a heavy riff, such as on the aptly named 'Big Riff', but for the most part this one falls into the progressive rock category. Yes, file this one between Captain Beyond and Egg in your prog library. Musically it is not as technical as most prog bands, this has more of a Pink Floyd vibe to it: trippy, spacey, meandering and melodic. Their singer sounds more and more like Jeremy Enigk from Sunny Day Real Estate as time goes on, and his falsetto singing is getting really, really high-pitched (King Diamond, eat your heart out). Voivod's Nothingface album comes to mind while listening to this, but so does Pearl Jam, Yes and Faith No More, so apparently comparisons aren't gonna help me out much here. Think late night headphone music, long songs floating around in outer space and crashing back to Earth with an emotional explosion, looped-out guitar effects and some weird inverted sounding riffs, layered over lyrics like "you're another coat of red in hell," sung over and over until you just have to admit, like it or hate it, Cave In have created one hell of an album here. I don't think most people who liked this band's older material will like, or perhaps understand, this disc. I give a big salute to the band for doing what they want to do, as this is obviously sincere music (they're probably not doing it to look cool: prog ain't the hippest of genres), and they do it well.
