LIGHT THIS CITY - Remains Of The Gods

It’s kind of funny how certain records creep up on you, completely defying any preconceptions you think are totally and irrevocably in place. Despite an extremely limiting metalcore band name (Light This City = male eyeliner and malls) and a deal with teenage-demographic-in-check crew Prosthetic Records, the Bay Area’s Light This City is the best Gothenburg band not to hail from Gothenburg since, like, forever. Seriously, Remains Of The Gods is an incredibly tight album, one that’s hatched songwriting down to an exact science and plays its exactitude like its life is on the line. Couple that fantastic precision with high-flying choruses and dual-lead lines that don’t/won’t give in to anything and you’ve got what In Flames circa 2005 should sound like: modern, edgy, pissed-off, exceedingly top-tier and, of course, melodic. Lest you’re still wondering - no, Light This City is not metalcore; yes, the band is very much ahead of the pack; no, this sound is not original in the least; yes, Remains Of The Gods is the album that could have saved Gothenburg from itself.
