SUFFOCATION - Suffocation

You’ve got to wonder what Morbid Angel must think of it all. First Cannibal Corpse, then Deicide, and now Suffocation have all given their careers a huge boost with albums that, at the very least, equal their strongest past achievements. Buoyed by the acclaim generated by 2004’s Souls To Deny, the New Yorkers are on blazing form here, craftily refreshing their seminal sound and, for the first time since Pierced From Within, successfully reproducing the ferocious nose-flattening intensity of their legendary live shows. Perhaps more importantly, the standard of songwriting on display effortlessly decimates the vast majority of contemporary death metal. The band’s trademark complexity remains a constant, but there’s an incisive power behind the riffs on ‘Abominations Reborn’, ‘Redemption’ and ‘Entrails Of You’ that makes this not just the best Suffocation album yet, but also their most accessible. It’s your turn now, Trey. No pressure.
