Alan Jones from Musicweek.com is reporting:

With AC/DC’s Black Ice surging past the million sales mark on its second week on release, and 11 debuts in the Top 20 it looks as though the US album market is in recovery – but looks can be deceptive.

The aforesaid AC/DC album turned in an excellent second week sale of 270,923 but despite its efforts and the plethora of high debuts sales last week actually retreated by 1.7% compared to the previous week.

There’s worse: At 6.96m, sales were down a massive 24.76% on the same week in 2007.

And let’s not forget that 2007 was itself a disaster, with album sales in the year of 501m. It was the seventh straight year in which sales slipped, and was 36.19% below the record tally of 785.1m albums sold in 2000.

2008 is bound to be much worse – even before that 24.76% slide for last week is factored in, year-to-date album sales were down a further 12.3%.
