Australia star David Gulpilil’s nomadic outback life has seen him so far removed from modern society, he had only just discovered his friend JIMI HENDRIX had died.
The 55-year-old actor has been featured in a string of iconic Australian films; Crocodile Dundee, Walkabout and now Australia – but aside from his career on the big screen, he leads a genuine life of natural isolation.
The level of Gulpilil’s isolation was realized by director Baz Luhrmann during a casting meeting for the film Australia.
Luhrmann said of Gulpilil: "He's quite mystical. I went to see him and he said, 'Baz. That fellow I played didgeridoo with all those years ago. Jimi Hendrix. Is he still around?' "He had no idea."
Gulpilil met Hendrix in 1970 and became friends with the groundbreaking guitarist shortly before his death the same year.
