PUNISH YOURSELF Reissues Due Through Season Of Mist Records; Spin Off Project 1969 WAS FINE To Release Debut In March
January 27, 2009, 15 years ago
Season Of Mist Records will reissue the PUNISH YOURSELF titles Crypt 1996 - 2002 (March 2nd) and Cult Movie (March 16th) on DCD digipak editions.
The label will also release Punish Yourself spin off project 1969 WAS FINE's debut, 1969 Was Fine... But 666 Is Alright, on March 30th.
Says the label, "You already know Punish Yourself, a wild bunch of glow-in-the-dark industrial zombies delivering a total assault on the senses, including heavy electronic beats and visual mayhem. Season of Mist are happy to introduce you to the band's offspring 1969 WAS FINE, whose debut album 1969 Was Fine... But 666 Is Alright will be released on March 30th in France, Benelux and Switzerland."
"1969 Was Fine was created as a Punish Yourself side-project, featuring the four Punish Yourself members plus their tour-manager as bass player and Cyril Laurent on saxophone - who also played as a guest with Punish Yourself", the band states. "Basically, it was born from a simple desire: being able to play loud fast warped rock n' roll / afterpunk, with no make-up, light show or complicated electronics. Our music stands somewhere between The Birthday Party and Suicide, Monster Magnet and Joy Division, Blue Oyster Cult and Foetus, while our lyrics pay a heavy tribute to rock n' roll cult idols like Johnny Thunders, Stiv Bators or La Muerte..."In other news, Season Of Mist will re-release Punish Yourself's finest two albums next month. After the Gore Baby Gore reissue last summer, here come Crypt 1996-2002 on March 2nd and Cult Movie on March 16th.
In 2001, the release of Punish Yourself's sophomore album Disco Flesh Warp 99 rose Hell in the French industrial underground, as it held the band's first dance floor hits which established Punish Yourself as a serious competitor to ATARI TEENAGE RIOT, to name but one. Eight years later, this album still sounds incredibly powerful, thanks to a top-notch production. As a bonus, this reissue includes the band's very first and long out-of-print Feuer Tanz System album, originally released in 1998, and no less than thirteen previously unreleased or rare tracks. Crypt 1996-2002 is the absolute key to the inception of this incontrovertible leader of the French industrial scene.
Cult Movie is an instrumental album, which could be seen as a dramatic change in the band's musical style, especially since it has more to do with a movie soundtrack than with a new dance floor hymn collection like the ones Punish Yourself was previously used to releasing. Actually this fifth album should rather be seen as an interlude on which the band pay tribute to the movie world and its music. Cult Movie is like a wordless intermission where Electro, Punk, old-school Industrial, lunatic Jazz, Progressive Rock, Big-Beat and Harsh-Noise all meet under the flag of a giant Hollywood-like production! This reissue comes with a bonus disc including Sexplosive Locomotive, Punish Yourself's classic third album, and three live bonus tracks as well as a previously unreleased video track.
Both albums will be available in France, Benelux and Switzerland only, but they can be ordered from anywhere in the world on Season of Mist's e-shop.
