June 24, 2009, 15 years ago
Norway's Metal Express Radio has issued the following update:
"Months ago we counted down Joel McIver's The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists and toted it as the soundtrack to his book of the same name. Now we're going to cover Appendix 2 of his book entitled 'Shredders, Not Metallers'. As Joel explains, 'Just to expand a little on the point I made in my introduction at the front of the book that my Top 100 list is for Heavy Metal guitarists, not Rock guitarists. I'm going to list here the phenomenal players whose work sometimes strays into the Metal arena - but who are best known as fast and dextereous soloists rather than Heavy Metal songwriters. A few years ago they were often labelled as Metal players, but today we know the truth. These are all amazing guitarists - but not known for playing in Metal bands. Hence their absence from the Top 100.'

Following is McIver's original press release for the book:
"Book 12 is The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists, my first guitar book, out just after Christmas. I'm absolutely delighted with it and am fortunate that it's being published by Jawbone Press, the world leader in guitar titles. Basically it lists from 100 to 1 (that's right) the best guitarists in heavy, thrash, death, doom, black and power metal, with exclusive interviews for most of the entries and a foreword by none other than Glen Benton of DEICIDE.I wrote this book partly because I'm a guitar geek and write for every issue of Total Guitar, but also in annoyance at the usual 'world's best guitarists' lists which magazines occasionally publish. One mag which should really know better compiled a recent list of supposed metal players and included Neil Young and Pete Townshend! Rather than write a filthy email to the editor, I wrote my own book, based on the slightly intolerant principle of excluding anyone who doesn't play a form of metal. So you won't find Angus Young or Steve Vai in there."
