Beatrice Thomas from Thewest.com.au is reporting:

It might have been a highway to hell for AC/DC but tram tour operator Jon Tomkins hopes his new tour marking home-town hero and lead singer Bon Scott’s early years in Fremantle will be a road to a successful tourism venture.

The Highway to Hell tour, which had its first trial yesterday for visiting US Navy sailors, starts at the Bon Scott statue at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour.

It takes in Scott’s childhood home in Harvest Road and his schools, North Fremantle Primary and John Curtin High School.

The Scottish-born singer’s brush with the law at Fremantle Prison, how he got the nickname “Bon” and the mystery surrounding his premature death at age 33 is also discussed during the 90-minute tour, which visits Scott’s grave at Fremantle Cemetery.

All this while AC/DC songs are played on a big screen. Mr Tomkins said the tour promised to “dispel some myths and tell some of the truths” about Scott’s life, including the commonly held belief that he served time at the maximum security Fremantle Prison when he was just 16.

Mr Tomkins has been running Fremantle Tram Tours for four years and said demand for visits to Scott-related sites was constant.

Visiting US sailors and AC/DC fans Mike Gisborne, 22, and Steve Whalen, 24, were the first aboard the Highway to Hell tour yesterday and said they found it informative.

“It was an enjoyable tour and we had a great tour guide,” Petty Officer Gisborne said.

The tour will initially only run three times a day on Sundays, starting next week, after an official launch this Thursday on what would have been Scott’s 63rd birthday.

Tickets cost $25 for adults and $10 for children.
