Guitarist BRUCE KULICK (GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, ex-KISS) checks in with the following update:
"It was a jam packed Day 2 for the Fantasy Camp, and I have to say once again the campers and I had a day we won't soon forget. The morning started with my band rehearsing the COUNTING CROW's song 'Mr. Jones' and by lunch time we were close to having that song figured out. But during our lunch Angus, who will sing the song, got a chance to discuss the vocal key with Mark Hudson (who is amazing helping singers), so we had more work in order to get that right. But all of that work happened after an amazing meeting with Jon Anderson from YES. David Fishof asked me to handle the interview, as I was certainly the biggest yes fan of the counselors. I have to say I was thrilled, as he and his band made a huge impact on me when I was first jamming on guitar and playing in bands. The questions covered all things, from the early recordings to the later days, the different band members through the years and, of course, the artwork work that was iconic for the band. He spoke of the song writing process for the band and his group recording in very unusual ways. Jon is very entertaining to listen to with his Zen like voice and his visionary personality. He then picked up an acoustic, tuned it down a bit, and sang 'Starship Trooper'! I was so excited by his performance I had goose bumps! The campers were mesmerized by Jon's angelic voice and arrangement as well, and I mentioned to the crowd how a song from such a complex band, when broken down to just his voice and an acoustic guitar is so powerful. That is the one of the magical things of the camp.
But soon it was back to work on the songs. We changed the key for the morning song, and shortly after that Jon came in to visit my band in our room. He was polite and said, 'Lets jam!' Vito (guitarist and band captain) was jamming a 'Voodoo Child' HENDRIX progression, so I grabbed a bass and joined in with him and, along with Jeff on drums and Myles on the second guitar, we played that for our special guest. Suddenly Jon was making up words and melodies very Yes-like over this Hendrix jam. He was having fun doing word play on the change of chords in the tune. What a treat! Before he left he said, "Here you go. Have these lyrics and make it your original!" We will be recording this at Capitol Records on Saturday! THANK YOU JON!
After coming down from that and a short break we did an overview for what we need to learn and concentrate on. We needed to picked a name for the band, and that was hard till Angela said, 'Well you work us SO hard, we feel neutered!' Then someone else said, 'We're 'SPAYED AND NEUTERED'!' It's a keeper! After dinner it was time for me to have a master class discussing all things guitar, and then a spirited jam with Rudy Sarzo, who joined the camp today. We had fun till after 10PM.
So, a memorable 12 hour day for Day 2. More excitement tomorrow, as MEAT LOAF will be visiting!"
