Toronto-based Metallus Maximus recently caught up with RHAPSODY OF FIRE guitarist / co-founder Luca Turilli to discuss the band's new album, The Frozen Tears Of Angels. An excerpt from the story is available below:

Musically the new album is easily Rhapsody’s most aggressive album to date, to the point that metal fans who dismissed the band in the past as too prissy and symphonic to waste time on will be surprised. The song ‘Reign Of Terror’, for example, includes growling vocals as an added touch to an already dark and brutal tune. According to Turilli this heavier direction was no accident.

“Me and Alex, we sit at a table and plan everything,” he says. “I think we’re the only band where the compositions start at the table with a piece of paper or a Word program on the PC (laughs). For this album, this chapter, the music had to be like this. It’s representative of the feelings and the dangers the characters face in the story. The music had to respect that.”

It’s fair to assume the ongoing (legal) battle with Magic Circle Records fuelled the aggression to some degree….

“Yes,” Turilli confirms, “but especially for us having the saga – I don’t want to call it a fantasy world because for me it’s not fantasy – we had this parallel universe to present the same drama and the same intensity of normal life. I’d say that when you have something like another place that you can write music for… it’s like going to the cinema. For those two hours you don’t think about the problems you have in real life. This was the same thing, so in the end it was pretty easy for us to just make our music. The music definitely saved our sanity (laughs).”
