According to Sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk, DEF LEPPARD drummer Rick Allen will officially open a respite centre for children with special needs in Sheffield on Saturday.

As patron of Amy's House, which has moved to new premises at Ballifield Primary School, Handsworth, he will join other VIPs, including Lord Mayor of Sheffield Alan Law, in launching hundreds of balloons at 11.10am.

Fundraising co-ordinator and trustee Julie Pickering said Amy's House now offered more staff and child places, a secure outdoor play area and its first summer scheme which will run for five weeks.

"As the only respite facility for special needs children and their siblings, this is a massive step forwards for us," she said.

Rick Allen said: "As someone whose life has been touched by a family member with special needs, you understand just how important a facility of this nature is in the provision of invaluable support not only to the child but also those close to them."

The volunteer-run charity helps children who suffer from a number of disabilities including ADHD, Epilepsy, Asperger's, Down's syndrome and autism.
