"Just to warn you, I don't think I'm going to like you," sneers Motörhead hellraiser Lemmy Kilmister moments after we're introduced for the very first time.Despite decades of debauchery and excess, the rocker, 64, is in no mood to talk about his legendary lifestyle as we sit down to chat at central London strip club Stringfellows. Borrowing from Del Boy, I feel like a turkey who's just been winked at by Bernard Matthews.
"All kinds of things about me are legendary, not just the excesses," he thunders. "And, for me, they're not excesses anyway. What you do every day is normal, right?"
Growing increasingly irate, the fiery frontman threatens to walk out and back into the arms of Peter Stringfellow's pole dancing employees before I've even asked a question.
"It's going to be all about my bad habits, is it?" he snarls furiously, clutching a JD and coke. "Who cares if I drink? So what? 'This guy's a hopeless boozer. He should be in rehab.' Let's do something about the album or I'm out the door."He claims one of the reasons he wants to steer clear of the subject is to avoid encouraging impressionable others to follow in his dangerous footsteps.
"I'm not going to promote it as a lifestyle," he says in a flash of compassion. "I don't want some kids dying because they drunk because of me. If you say this guy drinks like a fish after 35 years in Motörhead, they'll think, 'Oh, I can do that too.'"However, the metal icon - whose exploits have often overshadowed his stellar services to heavy rock - isn't about to turn over a new leaf. After all, he relies on his stockpile of Marlboro Reds and Tennessee whiskey to maintain his signature gravelly larynx.
"This voice does good on cigarettes," he says. "That's part of the training. I have to keep smoking. If I stopped smoking, my voice would suffer. I couldn't possibly do my job if I didn't smoke and drink."Click here for the complete article.
