According to the Winnipeg Free Press, KISS' Gene Simmons has entered into the debate on what the return of Winnipeg's NHL team should be named. "The Winnipeg Destroyers," says Simmons, with the obvious tie-in to KISS' legendary 1976 album Destroyer.

On May 31st, True North Sports and Entertainment announced it had signed an agreement in principle to purchase the Atlanta Thrashers from Atlanta Spirit, LLC, and relocate the franchise to Winnipeg, Manitoba. It has been confirmed the team will be re-named, although whether or not the Thrashers will adopt the Winnipeg Jets name or have a new name has yet to be addressed.

Due to rising operating costs and salaries attributed to the weak Canadian dollar at the time, the Jets last played in Winnipeg on April 28, 1996.
