#21) KIM MITCHELL - Akimbo Alogo (Alert - 1984)
After the break-up of MAX WEBSTER, guitarist and vocalist KIM MITCHELL found himself going solo, first cranking the massively amazing five-track Kim Mitchell EP, and then shortly after, this classic debut full-length. Max lyricist Pye Dubois was still on board, lending his child-like world view and humour to Kim’s versatile and varied music. A good four or five Canadian hits emerged, with anti-drink anthem ‘Go For Soda’ (embraced in the US by MADD and hitting #86 on the Billboard singles charts) and ballad ‘All We Are’ being the biggest. The ‘Rumour Has It’ guitar solo is this writer’s (Martin Popoff) favourite guitar solo of all time – check it out – and while we’re at it, ‘All We Are’ is about the smartest, coolest “power ballad” ever (again according to me), due to no less than its drumming, its guitar solo and the dual vocals of Kim Mitchell and Peter Fredette. Huge hit album for Kim in Canada (platinum/100,000 units sales-wise), as were the two follow-ups, Shakin’ Like A Human Being (his biggest) and Rockland, with three other of Mitchell’s records also achieving Canadian certifications. Kim is currently a radio show host for CILQ-FM (Q107) in Toronto.
