#20) VOIVOD - Nothingface (Mechanic - 1989)

Quebec progressive thrash masters VOIVOD were already four records deep into their realm of impermeable sci-fi madness when Nothingface emerged. Away (Michel Langevin; drums), Snake (Denis Bélanger; vocals), Piggy (Denis D'Amour; guitar) and Blacky (Jean-Yves Thériault; bass) found themselves on a major label, and with a minor hit on their hands, their cover of PINK FLOYD’s ‘Astronomy Domine’ fitting perfectly the band’s swirling, nightmarish vibe, an element captured stunningly in the classic production video crafted for its promotion. The rest of the album was typical – and typically odd – Voivodian scientific thrash with odd melodies, chords, layers of lyrics and thought provocation at ever turn. Nothingface was also the band's first album to enter the Billboard 200 charts, peaking at number 114.
